Fractal Music

All of the music in this gallery is based on mathematical patterns from a computer program called Fractmus. The composition process involves selection of algorithms for each voice, the tweaking of variables for each algorithm, and the setting of the timing for when each voice comes into play. If you would like to learn more about the creation process, or you want to try it yourself, check out the Fractmus homepage, and also read more of my thoughts on this topic in the music section of the writing page.

Metroid Return    length = 1:31
I started getting results that reminded me of the creepy music from the old Metroid for the NES, so I called it "Metroid Return". It makes sense to me to use mathematical patterns to create, or at least help get ideas for the music for a game like this.

Samus' Flashback    length = 0:40
Sticking with the Metroid theme, I wrote one to go along with a flashback to Samus' childhood. This never happens in any of the games, but I think it would be very cool to see.

Piano Experiment III    length = 1:23
This is a collection of patterns that I find especially pleasing. The song also loops fairly well.

Ben's Trio    length = 1:34
Clarinet, Tuba, and Piano, all the instruments that I am most familiar with, together for the first time! Well, in my fracatal and algorithmic music anyways. Too bad nobody could ever play it. It's computer generated all the way. Fun stuff.
