Ben's Art Gallery:

imagination

These are drawings that I have done in order to explore and develop my ability to draw from my imagination. For me it is a way to test what I have learned through observations, and to combine, merge, and invent new things. Some of the drawings date back a few years, some show anime or manga influences, and some are done in more of a concept art style. Over time I will add more to this collection, possibly including some drawings that are computer colored. They are listed in chronological order, except for where the images go together. The thumbnails are only a small section of the whole drawing.

dark-dragon
"Dark Dragon"
I made this image in the spring of my High School graduation. I was in drawing II at the time, and I was already very interested in anime. I wanted to start working in a comic art style of drawing and utilize my imagination more like I did as a child. I took all my favorite elements of dragons and combined them to get this guy. I named him Hei Mu, Chinese for "a shady deal". I also designed his body, but It was left in the rough draft phase. I post-processed this drawing with a minimum filter to darken the lines a little.

"Princess Lillevivia"
I studied a book on drawing female manga characters, as well as some of Masamune Shirow's work, and then applied the knowledge I gained from them to the creation of this drawing. While I am not completely satisfied with the proportions, it was a major improvement over my previous efforts at drawing the female form. I am quite proud of the costume and overall character design. I sometimes wish that I had left it in just the line art form, which would have allowed me to shade and color it using painting programs and my graphics tablet. I didn't have that capability at the time, and I needed something to do in my apartment at the U besides homework, so I went and filled the whole page up. I drew it on 8" X 10" paper.

emulating-amano---terra
"Emulating Amano - Terra"
My aunt bought me the Final Fantasy - Japan art book by Yoshitaka Amano, and I was instantly love struck with his color use. I found an image on the inside front cover sleeve of the character Terra that had a great feel to it, but was hurt by the slight ugliness that the sketchiness of the drawing gave her. I made my own version inspired by it except without color, changing her clothes, pose, hair, and jewelry slightly, and also making it more symmetrical and refined. I now wish that I would have added the playful dragon and background as well, but it is still a favorite of mine.

esper-girl-terra
"Esper Girl Terra"
The 16 bit graphics of Final Fantasy III did not allow for much detail, but they definitely let your imagination run wild. I made my own interpretation of Terra in esper form, which was what she could morph into during battle due to her mixed ancestry. I based it on the tiny images in the game, where she is naked, pale white and pink with blank white eyes and hair down to her ankles. I later came across the concept drawing that Amano made for her, and I saw that mine was quite different. It had the pupils defined, she was dark pink, had fangs and fur and looked downright feral. I am guessing that my version is closer to how most gamers imagined her to look.

"Metal Saviour Elgris"
My aunt also bought me an import art book called Super Robot Generation. Yes, I know what you're thinking -- it's one of the reasons we sometimes call her "Auntie best". I am very much into mecha. In order to draw them well you need to be able to think three dimensionally, and also build up a certain vocabulary of forms. Learning the history of the giant mecha is a good place to start. I loosely based this mech on Giant Goag, a 13.5 meter tall, 12.5 ton, butt kickin' robot from a show that aired in Japan in '84. I never actually saw the show, but I suspect it was cool enough.

special-beast
"Special Beast"
I drew this in response to a thread on Studio G.T.'s concept design forum. They were creating character designs for a story idea that someone posted. I designed this secret weapon by combining a chameleon with an ankylosaurus. It's sort of sketchy, but sufficiently scary. I never actually posted it; I think I drew it after they were done with that topic.

ninja
"Ninja"
If I were a ninja warrior, what would I look like? This! I don't know why I have a thing about ninjas; maybe it's because they're totally sweet. I gave him some armor for blocking blade swipes if he gets into a big brawl. I think the design has a slightly modern feel to it, and is somewhat reminiscent of Shadow from Final Fantasy III, except less gaudy. I used a minimum filter to make him look more sinister.
